PDH Course Description: The most important single characteristic of a beam is its strength. The two most important quantities that must be considered in the design of beams are vertical shear and bending moment. In the design of reinforced concrete beams for the limit state of failure several factors need to be reconciled since these beams are neither homogeneous nor elastic at the ultimate load.

This course will cover the basic concepts of design of reinforced concrete beams, based on the new criteria specified in the latest edition of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete ACI 318-02, (herein referred as ACI 318).

The topics included are: design assumptions, general principles and requirements, minimum reinforcement for flexural members, new load factors and strength reduction factors, and distribution of flexural reinforcement. Doubly reinforced sections, nonrectangular sections, T-beams two-way slab, deep beams, shear and torsion, and prestressed beams are not in the scope of this course.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

PDH Course Description: In addition to meeting flexural requirements, beams must be safe against premature failure due to diagonal tension in the concrete as a result of shear and longitudinal flexural stress. Tension stresses are of particularly concern in view of the low tensile strength of concrete. These tension stresses are not only limited to the horizontal bending stresses which are caused by bending alone. Tension stresses of various inclinations and magnitudes, resulting from shear alone (at the neutral axis) or from combined action of shear and bending, are present in all parts of a beam and can affect its integrity if not adequately provided for.

This course will cover the basic concepts of design of shear strength and shear reinforcement for nonprestressed reinforced concrete beams, based on the new criteria specified in the latest edition of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete ACI 318-02, (herein referred as ACI 318).

The topics included are: shear stress based on linear stress distribution, shear strength of beams with and without shear reinforcement, lower and upper limits of shear reinforcement, critical section for shear strength calculation, and ACI 318 code provisions for shear strength of beams. The course will cover beams of intermediate and slender lengths only. The effect of axial force on shear strength, deep beams, brackets and corbels, torsion, shear friction, shear transfer for two-way slab and prestressed beams are not in the scope of this course.

PDH Course Description: Many steel structures require connections that can develop moment because the beams are parts of a rigid frame. Beams that are part of the wind-bracing system of multi-story building must resist end moments resulting from both wind, seismic, and gravity loads. In the usual case, the moment capacity of the connection in such frames depends upon tension and /or shear developed in the fasteners or welds. This 4-hour course will review the basic concepts of the design of fully restrained moment connections (refer as FR moment connection in this course), based on the criteria specified in part 12 of the latest edition of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Manual of Steel Construction, Load and Resistance Factor Design, Third Edition, November, 2001, (herein referred as LRFD). The topics included are: general requirements for moment connections, including the effect of the moment connections on the flanges and web of the columns, prying forces in moment-resistant connections, welding considerations for FR moment connections, flange-plated FR moment connections, and directly welded flanges. Design of FR moment connections for HSS and steel pipe, extended end-plate moment connections, FR moment splices, and moment connections to column-web supports are not in the scope of this course. For FR moment connections that are part of a seismic-force-resisting system in which the seismic response factor R is greater than 3, refer to the Seismic Provisions, which are available from AISC at www.aisc.org. PDH Course Description: Reinforced concrete is a very versatile and durable building material. Reinforced concrete efficiently combines the best properties of concrete and reinforcing steel into a strong structural element. In addition, the high alkalinity of concrete helps to protect the embedded steel from corrosion. However, due to the porosity of concrete, its use in exterior environments and tendency to be exposed to deleterious chemicals, this material can easily be subjected to deterioration.

Deterioration of concrete can take the form of corrosion of the internal reinforcing or degradation of the exposed surface of the material. Cracks increase the likely hood of the deterioration of concrete in most environments. Concrete can also become deteriorated via freeze/thaw cycles, internal aggregate reactions and heat. Visual and destructive methods of investigation should be employed when determining the cause of concrete deterioration. The results of the physical observations and material tests associated with a proper investigation should be used to establish the best methods of repair and prevention of further deterioration.

PDH Course Description: Beams are structural elements that support principally transverse loads, and are subjected mainly to flexure, or bending. The complete design of a steel rolled-shape beam includes addressing bending strength, shear resistance, deflection, lateral support, web and flange local buckling, and support details. Design for bending is in most cases the primary concern.

There are many terms used for beams in construction, such as girders (larger beams that support smaller beams), joists (beams that are closely spaced), purlins (roof beams spanning between trusses), girts (horizontal wall beams resisting bending caused by wind on the side of industrial building), stringers (longitudinal bridge beams spanning between transverse beams), lintels (beam supporting a wall over window or door openings). Other terms such as header, trimmer, rafter, and ridge, are often used for beams in wood construction.

This course will address the basic concepts steel beam design and other flexural members based on the criteria specified in Part 16, Chapter F of the latest edition of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Manual of Steel Construction, Load and Resistance Factor Design, Third Edition, November, 2001, (herein referred as LRFD). There are many steel elements that can be used as beams, including rolled shapes, cold-formed shapes, and fabricated beams and trusses. The course will emphasize the design of rolled shapes, mainly I-beams (W, M, and S-shapes).

The topics included are: general requirements for flexural strength, bending stress and plastic moment, nominal flexural strength for doubly symmetric shapes and channels, compact and non-compact sections criteria, elastic and inelastic lateral-torsional buckling bent about their major axis, and shear strength of beams.

Members subjected to combined flexure and axial force, and fatigue; and members with tapered-webs, and slender web elements (plate girders) are not in the scope of this course. These members are covered in sections H1, K3, F3, and Appendix G of the LRFD.

PDH Course Description: This three-hour online course provides general guidelines for the removal of damaged or deteriorated concrete. Successful and durable concrete repairs depend on careful planning and consist of removal, surface and steel preparation and reconstruction after removal of concrete. The student will become familiar with the methods typically used for concrete removal including blasting, crushing, cutting, impacting, milling and presplitting together with their uses, advantages and limitations. Monitoring techniques to detect damages to the remaining concrete after completing removal work are presented. The damaged area must be properly prepared because If the entire defective concrete and corrosion product of the reinforcing steel is not removed, the repair materials may not bond properly to the existing concrete member and the repair will fail.

The existing condition and cause or causes of damages are considered in the selection of suitable methods and materials for repair. Concrete damages include cracking, surface deterioration, joint damages, erosion, seepage and spalling. Repair methods and materials consist of various grouts, polymer coatings, jacketing, overlays and injections, various types of cement, concrete and admixtures. Also considered are the preparation of concrete surfaces and reinforcement steel preparation and the replacement and addition of reinforcement steel for a successful and durable concrete repair. Concrete repairs often fail because of poor selection of repair materials. Properties of newer repair materials such as the coefficient of thermal expansion and modulus of elasticity often differ from the existing concrete. If the repair material is not physically or chemically compatible with the existing concrete, debonding, cracking or failure may occur. The student will understand the measures required in preparing concrete surfaces and reinforcement steel for sound and durable damage repairs.

PDH Course Description: The primary purpose of this course is to highlight the importance of the use of petrographic analysis as a part of any thorough investigation and on-site condition survey of a deteriorated concrete structure. To often conclusions concerning the nature or cause of deteriorated concrete, as well as the repair of the same, are based on visual observations only, particularly with structures exposed to chlorides (such as road de-icing salts). The resulting recommendations in such instances, more often than not, can lead to repair methods and techniques that can actually exacerbate the conditions which in turn can lead to accelerated deterioration of the structure. The use of petrographic analysis can avoid the pitfalls associated with investigations based on on-site visual observations only. This course will enable the user to understand the appropriate uses of and the types of concrete pathologies that can be determined with petrographic analysis.

PDH Course Description: Construction of residential buildings in coastal zones presents challenges to the designer or builder not usually found in more inland locations. For all coastal residential buildings, these challenges may include the following:

  • Various connection details require additional inspections
  • Careful surveying is required to place the building within property line setbacks and above the Design Flood Elevation (DFE)
  • Special care which is required to ensure that all elements of the building will withstand the large forces associated with high wind speeds and coastal flooding
  • Difficulty of providing durable exterior construction in a moist, sometimes salt-laden, environment
  • The requirement to protect and, usually, place utilities above the DFE In constructing coastal residential buildings on elevated pile foundations, builders face additional challenges
  • Difficulty of constructing a driven pile foundation to accepted construction plan tolerances
  • Difficulty of building on an elevated post-and-beam foundation, compared to building on continuous wall foundations
  • The additional care that must be taken in constructing a building envelope that will withstand the intrusion of air and moisture under the effects of high wind speeds.

  • Fact:
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) regulations state that for buildings in V- zones, “a registered professional engineer or architect shall develop or review the structural design, specifications and plans for the construction, and shall certify that the design and methods of construction to be used are in accordance with accepted standards of practice” for meeting the provisions of the NFIP regulations regarding buildings in V zones.

PDH Course Description: This course will completely review the design process required for residential buildings (one to three-story) to withstand hurricanes and other severe natural hazard events. Specific case examples will be evaluated in detail explaining each procedure with example calculations and complete diagrams.

The required calculations to determine every specific design load (force) which could be applied to the structure is not within the scope of this course. The site-specific forces, which have been previously determined, will be used in this course to design a structure that can withstand these forces. To determine site-specific design loads it is suggested that the design professional should refer to pertinent sections of the IRC 2000, in addition to those sections of the IBC 2000, which may be cited within this course. Additional reference sources should also include one or more of the following sources in high wind zones.

  • Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and other structures (ASCE 7-98)
  • American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) Wood Frame Construction Manual for One and Two- Family Dwellings (WFCM)
  • Southern Building Code Congress International Standard for Hurricane Resistant Residential Construction (SSTD 10)

  • In this course the design method is Allowable Stress Design (ASD), so there are factors of safety (FS) built into the development of the material stresses and the forces at the connections. This design method has been chosen because (ASD) continues to be the predominant design method in light-frame, residential, wood construction.

PDH Course Description: This course is based on the FEMA guidelines, which provide a basic framework for the earthquake design and evaluation of dams. The general philosophy and principles for each part of the framework are described in sufficient detail to achieve a reasonable degree of uniformity in application among the Federal agencies involved in the planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and regulation of dams. The guidelines deal only with the general concepts and leave the decisions on specific criteria and procedures for accomplishing this work up to each agency. Because these guidelines generally reflect current practices, it will be necessary to make periodic revisions, additions, and deletions to incorporate state-of-the-practice earthquake engineering.

The scope of the seismic hazard study at a site depends on the seismicity of a region or site-specific considerations, the types of structures involved, and the consequences of failure. The design and evaluation of dams for earthquake loading should be based on a comparable level of study and analysis for each phase of the study (seismotectonic, geological, site, geotechnical and structural investigations). That level of study should reflect both the criticality of the structure and the complexity of the analysis procedures.

Dams in zones of low seismicity generally should not require extensive seismic investigations and analyses unless failure would result in an unacceptable threat to life, property, or environment. Previous studies, as well as the performance of and experience with existing dams, suggest that concrete dams in regions of low to moderate seismicity, when adequately designed to withstand the appropriate static forces, have been competent to also withstand historic earthquakes. The same is true of well-constructed fill-type dams of conventional geometry placed on sound foundations, such as well-compacted rolled fill dams on rock foundations. Extensive investigations and design analysis may be required if the consequences of failure are unacceptable where the seismic hazard is high.

This course is based entirely on Federal Guidelines for Dam Safety - Earthquake analyses and design of Dams May 2005 published by FEMA. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials. You will be quizzed on the attached document in its entirety.

PDH Course Description: This course provides the design professional and others with guidance on how to determine—by calculation or graphical interpretation—the magnitude of the loads placed on a building by a particular natural hazard event or a combination of events. The calculation methods presented in this course are intended to serve as the basis of a methodology for applying the calculated loads to the building during the design process.

This course will review the procedures and formulas required to determine appropriate forces, which structures could become subjected to during hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis and other severe natural hazard events. The design procedures, which are required to determine site specific design loads (forces) which will be applied to the structure, is the basis of this course.

Various case studies of residential buildings will be analyzed with sample calculations demonstrating the procedures are covered in this course.

Continuing Education Unit for Contractor (GC):   0.4 CEU      AIA Learning Unit for Architect (RA):   4 LU

PDH Course Description: Any structure placed in an environment where the presence of ice is a hazard to its integrity and stability needs to be designed to withstand the forces generated by ice moving against it. A designer should also consider how the cold might affect the intended operations of a structure; because freezing of ice may hinder some of the normal warm weather operations.

The guidelines presented in this (four-hour) course are intended for structures placed in inland waters, e.g., lakes, rivers, and coastal waters.

The methodology given in this course for estimating ice forces is based on the results of theoretical and experimental research in ice mechanics and measurements of ice forces in the field. Most recently, our understanding of processes active during crushing of ice at various indentation speeds has been increased. Data on measured ice forces on large structures have recently been published. Except for the recommended values of effective pressure, the Corps guidelines for ice forces on structures are almost the same as those of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO 1994), which in turn were adopted from the Canadian Standards Association (CSA 1988, 2000). Montgomery et al. (1984) provides the background information for the recommendations in CSA (1988). The CSA (2000) and the AASHTO (1994) codes consider dynamic and static loads on bridge piers located in rivers, lakes, and coastal waters. The dynamic loads develop when moving ice fails against a pier during spring breakup, or when currents and wind move ice sheets past piers at other times of the year. The static loads are generated by thermal expansion or contraction of the ice and by fluctuations in the water levels.

This course is based entirely on “CHAPTER 6 Ice Force on Structures ” Publication (EM 1110-2-1612) published by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. PDH Course Description: This three-hour online course provides basic guidance for the properties of low-density concrete (LDC) and specified density concrete (SDC) and how they compare with those for normal-density concrete (NDC). The physical and mechanical properties, construction considerations, advantages, disadvantages and economic considerations of LDC are discussed. Also discussed are the guidelines for mixing, placing, curing, pumping and field controls during construction. Comparisons between the properties of low-density and normal-density concrete and special construction concerns are presented. Included tables summarize the differences in properties and the criteria for mix proportions described in the text.

The principal benefit for using LDC is the large mass that can be saved in a structure while having the same strength as with normal-density concrete. Since aggregate may be 60-70% of the weight of concrete, concrete densities can be 15-25% lower primarily because of the low-density of the manufactured aggregate. The benefits of reduced dead loads include the lighter weight of structural spans, lighter supporting members and reduced foundation requirements. Lighter loads or more pieces of prestressed members can be transported and truck concrete mixers can haul larger volumes because of the lighter weight concrete (provided legal and safety requirements are met).

Disadvantages include the higher cost for the manufacturing process of heating shale, clay or slate for the low-density aggregate and the transportation costs from the supplier. LCD requires an additional 15-50 lb/cy of cement to be comparable to normal-density concrete. Certain precautions must be observed to insure the aggregate is adequately saturated. If the aggregate is not adequately saturated, the slump will be decreased as the concrete mixture looses water to the under saturated aggregate resulting in reduced workability and pumping performance.

Most of the plans requiring wood construction in the United States have been issued with a reference to the American Softwood Lumber Standard- PS 20. Typically such a reference would be found in the “General Notes” located on the plans or specifications. Therefore any Engineer or Architect that has sealed plans referencing this standard should be fully aware of the contents and the latest revisions.

This Standard is used for domestic production consumed in and exported from the United States, and for lumber imported into the United States and has been recently updated in September 2005. This Standard also provides a basis for the coordination of the grades of the various species of softwood lumber, the assignment of design values to lumber when called for, and the preparation of grading rules applicable to each species.

This course is based entirely on National Institute of Standards & Technology Voluntary Product Standard PS 20-05 (American Softwood Lumber Standard).

PDH Course Description: Conventional thinking is that Finite Element (FE) analysis is complex and requires expensive commercial software. This course shows that this is not necessarily true; FE theory can be understood in a few hours and is simple enough to put on an Excel spreadsheet. Finite Element software is an essential tool for structural engineers but it need not be complex or expensive. This course will present finite element in a simplified spreadsheet form, combining the power of FE method with the versatility of a spreadsheet format.

The user is provided with a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that solves FE two dimensional (2D) frame-type structural engineering problems. This spreadsheet is simplistic in comparison to commercial software and much more limited in capabilities, but is completely adequate for many structural building frame-type problems. I have used the FE spreadsheet for years and it has been invaluable. It is easy to learn if the user is already familiar with spreadsheets and it is much less expensive than commercial FE software.

PDH Course Description: Safe design of wood components, such as beams, headers, floor joists, etc. requires the proper determination of design values. Reference design values that are listed among many sources need to be adjusted either upwards or downwards depending on the intended service, loading and support conditions of the wood. This course provides prescriptive guidance on how to determine allowable design values for wood. The methodology taught in this course is based on the National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDSWC) published by the American Forest & Paper Association and the American Wood Council which is a recognized standard for designing wood dwellings. It is not necessary to acquire the NDSWC but it would be a valuable reference to have and would provide further insight into the course.

This course demonstrates how to adjust the reference design values for the most significant factors. Methods for determining all the significant types of design values for wood will be discussed which include bending, shear, compression (parallel & perpendicular to the grain), tension and deflection. Some of the major factors affecting the design values that will be explained include moisture content, temperature, beam stability, column stability, load duration, repetitive factor, etc. Narration and pictures are provided on some of the slides to expound on the printed information. Realistic examples are included at the end of the slides that show how to size a header and determine the required number of header supports.

PDH Course Description: When the closing of the frontier in the late 19th century put an end to the horizontal expansion of America, a new vertical frontier driven by need, technology, ambition, economics and ego would take its place. In the confines of densely populated cities, the only way to “make the land pay” was to stack floor upon floor and call it a Skyscraper.

Beyond the utilitarian need to build tall buildings, there was the prestige and promotional value to consider as well. The ancient pharaohs of Egypt each in their turn tried to outdo the previous Pharoah’s pyramid in shear size and height; so too would America’s Captains of Industry in that decade of unprecedented economic growth and expansion: the 1920s. The Skyscraper races of the late 1920s and early 1930s concentrated on a sliver of land called Manhattan Island would herald both the beginning and end of The Golden Age of Skyscrapers. Who won or lost those races seems irrelevant today, but the buildings the races created remain highly relevant.

For an industrialist like Walter P. Chrysler, it was only natural to celebrate your success and promote your company’s products with the world’s tallest building, just as Singer and Woolworth had done before. Add to the mix the talents of a progressive architect steeped in the values of the 1925 Paris International Exhibition and the result was an Art Deco masterpiece: The Chrysler Building.

PDH Course Description: In the year 1889, France celebrated the 100th anniversary (centenary) of the French Revolution (of 1789). To mark the occasion, the capital city of Paris would host an International Exposition (Exposition Universalle) that would highlight the many achievements of the past hundred years made in French art, culture, architecture and, especially, science and technology. For such a proud event, why not make the centerpiece of the exposition itself a marvel of French know-how by constructing a tower three-hundred meters tall!

To find a suitable design, a competition was held, but with the combination of an attractive design for a wrought-iron latticed tower and the fact that France’s Magicien du Fer (Magician of Iron) - Monsieur Gustav Eiffel, was the applicant, the outcome was never in doubt. At first Eiffel dismissed the competition, but by his subordinates insistence (and design work), the Eiffel tower would make Gustav Eiffel both rich and famous.

The completed tower was a wonder of simplicity, technology and pre-fabricated design. Though the cultural elitists cried foul, the Parisians and exposition visitors fell instantly in love with La Tour de 300-Meters. It was not meant to be a permanent fixture in Paris, but with the tower’s usefulness for scientific experimentation, communications and national defense, it became a necessity. At the same time, it became a symbol of Paris and the French nation itself. Perhaps that is its greatest legacy.

PDH Course Description: The period between the First and Second World War/s realized some of the greatest bridges ever conceived by humankind. So great was this achievement that the period between 1920 and 1940 came to be known as “The Golden Age of Bridge Building.”

In New York City, Othmar Ammann's George Washington Bridge (1931) proved long-span suspension bridges were feasible. On the other side of the continent, two great bridges spanned the San Francisco Bay: Golden Gate (1937) and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (1936), ending forever San Francisco’s isolation from the counties north and east of the peninsula San Francisco is situated on. But of all the bridges built in this period, perhaps none is as recognizable and so firmly enshrined in national identity as the Sydney Harbor Bridge (in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) which Sydneysiders affectionately refer to as “The Giant Coat Hanger.”

It was a dream that began in the early 19th century and took another century to achieve. The “Father of the Bridge” – Dr. John Jacob Crew (JJC) Bradfield, devoted his career to seeing the bridge built and in so doing transformed his native Sydney into a world-class city. Without the Sydney Harbor Bridge’s rail, tram, footpath and roadway that would forever connect the distant north and south shores of one of the world’s finest harbors, Sydney would not be the city we know today. Perhaps too it was fitting that a grand arch design was chosen for the site. Dating back to the world’s first great bridge-builders – the Romans, the arch reminds us all of the nobility of connecting people with great bridges.

PDH Course Description: With the end of the Second World War, New York’s port was in decline and lower Manhattan’s financial district only a shadow of its former self. What it needed, in the minds of the “Brothers Rockefeller” (David & Nelson) and others, was a heavy dose of urban renewal in the form of modernist architecture and enlightened city planning. What it needed, and got, was a “World Trade Center.”

Big ideas need big institutions with the wherewithal and financial resources to see them through to completion. In this case, it would be a “quasi-governmental agency” – the Port of New York Authority, who would take the lead – and controversial, role of developer and constructor. With a well-deserved reputation for professionalism and engineering excellence, exemption from the laws of the two states it served (NY & NJ) and very deep pockets, the die was cast by the early 1960s for the PNYA to create the WTC at the foot of Manhattan Island.

The twin towers of the WTC and the complex at its base were referred to, at the time, as “The First Buildings of the 21st Century,” for good reason. The WTC was a marvel of architectural and engineering design and innovation. From the “Giant Bathtub” (that kept the nearby Hudson River at bay) to the window-washing apparatus, the WTC was a springboard and proving ground for contemporary design, construction and manufacturing techniques. Modern super-tall buildings still use the express/local elevator system first adapted for use in the twin towers (based on the NYC subway system). By making the exterior walls load-bearing, thus freeing the interior spaces from support columns, fully 50% more rentable space was realized. This was a major achievement, then and now.

PDH Course Description: Every engineer knows that in order to achieve proficiency in Wind Analysis, he must first have a thorough knowledge of Trigonometry, Calculus, Rational Mechanics, Differential Equations, Structural Analysis, Structural Dynamics and Vibration Theory. To do that it may take years of hard work and practical application. Admittedly, nowadays he may buy a computer program which could do all that for him after he inputs the required descriptive parameters. However, it is important to keep in mind that doing so without a functional knowledge of the design basics may get him in trouble with his State Professional Engineering Board under charges of incompetence and unethical conduct.

As a solution to all above, this course offers the “need to know basics” on Wind Analysis for the busy engineer or architect, with examples of practical application and abundance of graphics to help achieve the “learn through your eyes” principles that will stay with him for years to come.

Practical examples of hand calculations are also offered for those who want to follow the motions of reasoned structural analysis.

PDH Course Description: Folded plates first appeared in Europe about one hundred years ago, then after the Second World War they were introduced in the United States where they became rapidly popular because they could cover large spans with relatively less amount of material, the construction methodology was clear and easy to follow and their design routine was logical and full of common sense.

A numerical example is presented in such a way that it can be followed step by step and used as a “road map” to use in the design of other practical cases the practicing engineer may have in his daily practice. In addition, he will find design alternatives as well as the pros and cons when it comes to their application to his particular conditions.

Although true that the design engineer has available plenty of computer programs for the design of folded plates, it is not less true that he can be held liable by his Board of Professional Engineers for not having a complete understanding of the process of hand design and the consequences could be devastating to his practice. Therefore, whether or not he plans to use computers, a full knowledge of the design is a must.

PDH Course Description: Tapered frames, flagpoles, light standards, and monopole highway signs are used extensively for the savings in material over constant cross-section (prismatic) beams. This is done by using maximum material cross-sections matching the required strength at that location, and decreasing the cross-section as the required strength decreases. Analysis of these tapered beams is, however, less well known than the analysis of structures with prismatic members. This course describes the finite element method used in analysis of these members, with examples, to gain an understanding of analysis of tapered frames and monopoles.
