Course Outline

This four-hour course, "Evaluation of Site Characteristics," is one of a series of courses prepared by the author on "Contaminated Site Remediation Strategies." The course series are designed to provide fundamental and practical approaches to the selection and design of remedial action and closure alternatives for contaminated sites. This course describes pertinent site characteristics and their relevance in selecting contaminated site closure options and remediation processes. The course is presented in five sections with example questions to facilitate reviews.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Learning Objective

The overall learning objective is to enhance the course participants' knowledge and skills in contaminated site remediation (or cleanup). At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to identify contaminated site characteristics (or conditions) and evaluate their relevance to site cleanup processes and closure options.

Intended Audience

This course is recommended for project and site managers, scientists, engineers and other professionals involved in contaminated site remediation, risk management and related practice. The course provides appropriate learning material for individuals with limited knowledge and experience. For the individuals with advanced knowledge and experience in site remediation, the course provides the initial but critical considerations necessary for selecting feasible and cost-effective remedial action strategies.

Course Introduction

Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA) for cleanups at contaminated sites provides alternative remediation goals (site closures) or risk management options. One may select a remediation strategy using generic cleanup target levels (based on conservative default assumptions) or site-specific media cleanup limits based on the site's characteristics or conditions. In addition to affecting site closure options, site characteristics determine the feasibility and effectiveness of remediation processes. Many remediation projects fail due to inadequate site characterization and/or poor evaluation of the site characteristics, leading to the selection and implementation of ineffective remedial actions. The decision to implement any remediation technology at a site should be made on case-by-case basis, considering site-specific factors. This course describes contaminated site characteristics and focuses on the evaluation of the characteristics, as an initial but critical consideration in the selection of site closure and remedial action alternatives.
