Course Outline

This course presents a method and information sources for estimating Green House Gas emissions from manufacturing facilities. Reasons for estimating these emissions can include benchmarking to other facilities or achieving greater awareness of environmental impacts. At the completion of this course, the student should understand methods for estimating Green House Gas emissions and how to use the information for monitoring the impact of a specific facility. Course contents include: (1) Why Estimate Green House Gas Emissions; (2) Green House Gas Sources in the US; (3) How to Estimate Green House Gas Emissions; (4) Example of Estimating Green House Gas Emissions; (5) Monitoring Emissions over Time; (6) Implementing Controls with new Projects; (7) Communicating Results; and (8) References and Information Sources.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Intended Audience and Benefit

This course is intended for those who understand the importance of Green House Gases and wish to estimate these emissions at one or more facilities. The course should also be useful for the engineer or manager who wishes to monitor these emissions at a facility to meet environmental improvement goals such as those included with ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management Systems.

This course will benefit the audience immediately by describing an approach to estimate and present Green House Gas emissions quantities. A longer-term benefit will be the ability to include consideration of Green House Gas emissions when developing and evaluating manufacturing options.


Course Introduction

Green House Gas emissions are linked to Global Warming and the potential for climate change. While there is some scientific uncertainty about the exact link, it is clear that there will be an increasing awareness and concern regarding increased Green House Gas emissions and their control/reduction. A basic skill required for engineers with the manufacturing sector will be the ability to estimate Green House Gas emissions and monitor changes in emissions over time. This course presents basic information on why and how Green House Gas emissions should be estimated. Other information is furnished on how to benchmark estimates to industrial sectors and suggested approaches to monitor emissions over time. At the completion of this course, the student should have sufficient understanding of Green House Gas Emissions to incorporate this concept into new project planning and to effectively communicate results to managers, employees, and the interested community.
