Total Building Commissioning

John A. MacGiffert, PMP, LEED-AP, CIEC

Course Outline

We have come full circle from an era when the designer played an active role in every phase of a building’s creation and development to one where the designer is being solicited to perform this same active role through the process of commissioning. This five hour course in intended to provide owners, architects, engineers and contractors with clear guidelines on what a Total Building Commissioning program should entail. The first part of this course provides a detailed definition of commissioning, how it works, and who is involved in the process. The second and final part of this course presents the public sector’s application of commissioning through the GSA guide for building commissioning.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Course Introduction

According to many owners, the quality of building construction has declined over the past few decades. Owners have spent decades micro-managing the economics of the individual pieces and parts of a building’s life cycle only to discover that the sum of their efforts have created a deleterious economic outcome. Total Building Commissioning is a means to hold everyone accountable for their piece of the project from its first conceptual idea through its successful operation. This course will provide the necessary guidance for the execution of a successful Total Building Commissioning program.
