Basic Electrical Connectoring

Carlo DeLuca, P.E.

Course Outline

This course presents a brief history of basic electrical connectors and the problems encountered with early aluminum conductor connections. It describes the major natures of failures and engineering analyses of the failures. The course also presents the steps taken to resolve the failures on the part of engineering, design, and standards making organizations. Standards and certification agencies are identified for their application to various industries, such as the Utility Power Industry, the Commercial, Industrial, and Residential Construction Industry and the Contractor Industrial Industry.

The solutions are also related to various connectors. A sampling of different methods to connect to conductors is discussed with descriptions of appropriate connectors. Particular cautions and features are discussed for each connector. The connectors are related to the industries in which they are used, including their appropriate standards. Some special types of connectors are discussed. The course completes with a brief summary stressing the attention that must be devoted to proper connectoring systems.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end.

Learning Objective

The objectives of this course are to provide a clear understanding. of electrical connections to conductor in the power, building and equipment industries. The reader will gain a knowledge of the major types of connections available, applications and the cautions that must be exercised in their use. Experience in the connector industry has revealed that most users do not appreciate the details that must be attended to in achieving reliable, safe and proper installation for connectoring systems. It reviews the problems encountered when early connections to aluminum conductor were encountered, and how to avoid these problems. The reader will better understand which industry standards must be consulted relating to the industries involved.

Intended Audience

This course is intended to make Engineers, Architects and Contractors more aware of the need to recognize the importance of proper connectoring in the design stage of projects. It also illustrates to the contractor the need to insure that proper connector installation is observed for safe and reliable buildings. It is important for standards engineers, particularly in Utility Power Companies, to be aware of the need to select standards and requirements which are compatible with their particular needs and to emphasize proper installation to their linemen.

Benefits

The benefits of this course are obvious. In addition to enabling Engineers, Architects and Contractors to enhance their expertise as professional engineers, the course will make their work more successful by providing more efficient, effective and more complete connectoring systems.
