Transformer and Transformer Vaults

Course Outline

This 4-hour course is intended to cover the specification, design, and application/installation of large and small transformers for different projects. The course provides the necessary rules, minimum basic legal requirements, and guidance for the design, and the installation of transformers. Topics such as overcurrent protection, secondary ties, parallel operation, grounding, guarding, and transformer vaults are discussed.

Special applications such as autotransformers, grounding autotransformers,
les-flammable liquid-insulated, and nonflammable fluid-insulated transformers are also covered.

The course materials are based entirely on the Article 450 of the national Electrical code NFPA 70. It will be necessary for the student to obtain a copy of NFPA 70, 2008 revision.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.

The purpose of this course is to make the student familiar with the rules and the code requirements for the design and application large and small transformer in industrial, commercial, government, and utility projects.

Intended Audience

This course is intended for professional electrical engineers, electrical designers, project engineers, and maintenance personnel involved in the application, specification, design, installation, service, and maintenance of dry-type or oil-insulated transformers.

This course will assist individuals and organizations in the application of large and small, dry-type or oil-filled transformers. Through explanation of rules and use of the tables the attendee will be able to design and specify transformers in compliance with National Electrical Code NFPA 70.
