Course Outline

The course teaches an understanding of the entries that typically appear on the monthly billing for electrical service. The course treats energy charges, demand charges, time-of-use, and low power factor penalties. The course discusses residential customers, who are usually served with a single phase service. Commercial and industrial customers, who are usually served with a three phase service, are also discussed. Possible remedial courses of action are reviewed.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Intended Audience

This course is intended primarily for electrical engineers who at times may be called upon to review a billing for electrical service with the intention of recommending changes in practices or gear so as to decrease monthly billings.    

Benefit for Attendee

Attendees will learn to better understand the billing practices of electric utilities as well as some of the possible measures that may be taken to reduce monthly electric bills.

Course Introduction

Too often, customers of an electrical service become resolved, incorrectly, that there is little that can be done to reduce an electric bill. This can be a significant error since changes in operational practices and, sometimes, electrical gear can result in significant reductions in the monthly billings for electrical service.
