Lean Series—Value Stream Analysis

Course Outline

This one hour online course provides a basic overview of the Value Stream Analysis process. Value Stream Analysis is the basic building block for creating an effective lean implementation plan. The process allows a Value Stream team to identify their current state, what they would like to achieve in a 3-5 year window, and to create a future state plan for incrementally achieving their ideal vision.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Learning Objective

At the conclusion of this course, the student will:

Be familiar with the Value Stream Analysis process;
Understand the elements of each of the three maps (Current State, Ideal State, and Future State) created in the process; and
Understand how the Future State map translates into an action plan.

This course is intended for all engineers, architects, and land surveyors.

The Value Stream Analysis training package is another element of the Lean Overview Series. This series provides an overview of lean tools and techniques to Engineers, Architects and Land Surveyors to help them participate more effectively in lean enterprise activities.

Each element of the Lean Overview Series provides a basic understanding of a lean tool or technique to help students develop a working knowledge of the concept and its purpose in a lean enterprise journey. The series starts with foundational elements and progresses to intermediate and advanced lean concepts. Each topic also provides references for additional study if the student is interested. The following figure illustrates the Lean Overview Series.

Course Introduction

The one hour Values Stream Analysis (VSA) Course discusses the reasons for conducting a VSA and its origin as part of the Toyota Production System. The course presents the four steps involved in a VSA (Current State Mapping, Ideal State Mapping, Future State Mapping, and the Implementation) along with the reasons for conducting each step and the linkage between each step. A relevant example is also included so that students can see how the maps change with each step. Lastly, the course shows how the VSA is tied to a Value Stream’s lean journey and how the VSA guides the lean transformation process.

Course Summary

Value Stream Analysis creates the roadmap for your lean journey. The three maps created in the analysis process are intended to pictorially help you communicate the current state, the ideal state and the future state. The future state map then becomes the basis for creating a phased action plan that guides the value stream team on their lean journey for next 6 to 12 months. Many people mistake the future state map as the deliverable for the VSA, however, the action plan is the true deliverable for a VSA. The action plan is your execution plan for achieving your future state.
