Exploring Non-Classical Solutions for Engineers

William N. Weaver, P.E. and John C. Huang, Ph.D., P.E.

Course Outline

The course covers the concept and benefits of allowing out-of-the-box thinking to provide non-classical solutions to engineering problems. The hazards of common activities that prevent the creative process from seeing all sides of the problem are detailed. Things to avoid in solving problems with non-classical are discussed along with the potential benefits of the process. How to avoid pitfalls that create unnecessary restrictions to the problem solving are presented.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Learning Objective

When completed the following learning objectives should have been achieved:

General Course Information

The course contains a broad introduction to the non-classical thinking process along with how to avoid restraints that inhibit the process. Avoiding the restraints offers the maximum benefit of the process. Cautions about unrecognized and built in restraints is presented.

Intended Audience

The course is directed at engineers working on problem solving.

Benefits to Attendee

The intended audience will receive the following benefits from this course material.

Course Introduction

This course material is designed to introduce the engineer to the thinking-out-of-the-box process including the benefits and problems.A brief exposure is provided to the various successful samples of non-classical engineering solutions. Cautions about various pitfalls and the critical nature of built-in restraints to creative problem solving are presented.

Course Summary

Completion of this material will provide the engineer with an understanding the “thinking-out-of-the-box” process. Sufficient information is presented to understand the scope of and how to benefit from the process of non-classical solutions.Details of work activities and industrial examples are discussed. Pitfalls and problems are presented along with some ideas as to their solution or avoidance. A sample of non-classical engineering solutions is provided to stimulate the thinking process.
