Cooling Towers: Design and Operation Considerations

Christopher Haslego, B.S. ChE

Course Outline

Cooling towers are a very important part of many chemical plants. They represent a relatively inexpensive and dependable means of removing low grade heat from cooling water. This 2-hour online course covers the different types of cooling towers, design methods, performance predictions, and theories behind cooling towers. It also reviews how cooling towers reject heat from chemical processing facilities.

The course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Learning Objective

At the conclusion of this course, the student will:

Intended Audience

This course is intended for chemical and mechanical engineers.

Benefit to Attendees

Attendee of this course will be able better comprehend the principles behind the operation and design of cooling towers. With a better understanding of the fundamentals, the attendee will be better prepared to troubleshoot cooling tower problems as they arise.

Course Introduction

Cooling towers are a key component to any chemical processing facility. They remove heat from process streams by rejecting this heat to the atmosphere by using water as a carrier fluid. Understanding how cooling towers are designed and properly operated are important steps keeping the units online and functioning properly.
