Course Outline

This 3 hours online course provides basic knowledge about the cooling water problems and solutions. The course provides insight to the commonly debated water problems and treatment approaches. The course is compiled in a simple question & answer format to reduce the learning time. The course is intended for use primarily to the students, end users, operators, energy & environmental auditors, contractors, O&M engineers and sales people.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Course Introduction

Heating and cooling are the essential operations of virtually all industrial processes, commercial air-conditioning and manufacturing activity. Water helps regulate temperature by rejecting heat from the hot equipment. The thermal efficiency, proper operation and longevity of the cooling water system; all depend on the quality of water and its reuse potential.

Water is very complex in nature. It contains a lot of impurities in dissolved & suspended form. Depending on the chemistry of the water and variations in temperatures, the impurities will tend to impact the surfaces and lead to scale formation, fouling and corrosion.

Course Summary

In today's world of expensive energy and replacement costs, it is more vital than ever, for heat exchange equipment to be kept free of insulating deposits. The four principal sources of these deposits are: scale, corrosion, biological growths and sludge. Scale deposits and corrosion products on the tube surfaces reduce heat transfer efficiency and increases energy costs. These factors are important for another reason: they have a direct effect on equipment life.

A chemical program in addition to the cooling water treatment is the only way to insure that deposit formation does not become a problem. Such steps basically will ensure not only operation efficiency but also a significant serving of energy. Water conditioning alone becomes a very important aspect of energy conservation program.

In conclusion it may be emphasized that properly conditioned and treated water is desirable activity whether it is for power generation, fertilizers, petrochemicals, steel, paper, air-conditioning, refrigeration or ice manufacturing or any other industry. In industrial process, manufacturing and air-conditioning applications, it is desirable to remove or reduce the hardness of water before it is used. For large capital-intensive energy projects such as power generation and petrochemical industry, the elaborate cooling water treatment schemes need to be carefully evaluated to enhance overall productivity.
