Course Introduction

In almost any nuclear, chemical, or mechanical system, the flow of fluid and pressure through a piping system or process must be controlled . A valve is a mechanical device to accomplish this task. Valves start and stop fluid flow, throttle fluid flow, control the direction of fluid flow, regulate downstream system or process pressure, or relieve component or piping over pressurization. A basic understanding of the theory, characteristics, and mechanical components of valves and actuators are essential to understanding how they function and operate within a system or process.
