Introduction to World Class Machine Maintenance Methods

Course Outline

This two hour course begins with a quick review of the evolution of modern manufacturing theory and the requirements it places on manufacturing equipment.  It then examines different maintenance management approaches used to address those requirements.  Strengths and weaknesses of the different approaches will be presented and recommendations made regarding desired attributes to attain best in class maintenance management in support of World Class manufacturing excellence.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills related to equipment maintenance:

Intended Audience

This course is recommended for engineers in all disciplines who interface with equipment maintenance functions.  Although written with manufacturing companies specifically in mind, the principles taught herein can be applied equally well to the maintenance of equipment used to produce products or services in any industry.  Previous experience with machine maintenance or facilities management is NOT required for successful completion of this course.

Benefit for Attendee

In this course, students will review the importance of maintaining the machinery utilized in the manufacturing process at its peak efficiency.  The age-old tendency of companies to operate machinery to the point of breakdown before effecting repairs is inefficient and unnecessary given the tools currently at our disposal.  It is far more advantageous to institute continuous processes of preventive or predictive maintenance to prolong machine life and prevent costly downtime associated with equipment failure.  At the conclusion of this course, students will have been introduced to these maintenance practices and understand their implications for financial and competitive gain in the manufacturing industry.

A world of ever-increasing competition dictates that manufacturers be able to produce their goods reliably, consistently, and perpetually.  Many factory managers find themselves faced with requirements for 24-7 operations to keep pace with customer demand.  In such aggressive environments, it is imperative that manufacturing equipment be available, when called upon, to function as it was designed to for as long as it takes to get the job done.

Course Summary

Any company currently utilizing a predominantly Corrective Maintenance (i.e. "fix-it-when-it-breaks") policy should certainly consider beginning the maintenance process improvement journey. Companies traditionally utilizing this type of maintenance methods have demonstrated that the benefits of employing the maintenance process improvement strategies described in this course can be enjoyed in a relatively short time span and continue for as long as the program is supported.. Companies with relatively new production equipment bases should begin Preventive Maintenance programs to provide regular servicing of their equipment to prolong its life. Companies with aging equipment bases should consider taking aggressive action to bring the older assets back to their intended operating condition and then continuing with regular Preventive Maintenance activities to prolong its life. Factory equipment in any industry can benefit from the maintenance programs described in this study and the results will go a long way to support the business goal of making money now and in the future and further support the efforts of manufacturing companies to achieve true World-Class performance.
