Course Outline

Whether you are an engineer or an architect, it is essential to have a basic understanding about the mechanics of materials. This course introduces engineers and architects to the fundamental principles involved in designing typical components such as drive shafts, floor beams, pressure tanks, and bolted connections found in machines or structures. The topics include the mechanical properties of materials, torsion, bending, stress and strain transformation, beam deflection, and column stability, with the emphasis towards the basic concepts and real-world applications. The course content is based on an engineering video tutorial series and the textbook Mechanics of Materials by Beer, Johnson, Dewolf and Mazurek or equivalent. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
