Course Outline
Refrigeration systems have become essential in our daily lives and are usually intended to maintain and extend the life of products. Selecting and designing the correct type of refrigeration system is important from an initial economic consideration, an environmental perspective, long term operation and maintenance cost considerations, and overall system safety. While the air conditioning and refrigeration industries are similar, they are actually two separate industries. This 2 hour course is intended to provide a brief examination of some of the issues that need to be considered when designing these systems, and is intended for use by students, engineers, refrigeration system designers, architects, and contractors.
This course requires the completion of a multiple-choice quiz at its conclusion in order to obtain the necessary certification.
Learning Objective
At the conclusion of this course the student should be able to:
- Understand some of the safety considerations associated with the design of a refrigeration system;
- Understand basic types and differences between refrigerants;
- Understand the economic considerations associated with the choice of refrigerants;
- Understand the two basic types of refrigeration system designs; and
- Understand basic design considerations.

This course is intended for use by students, engineers, refrigeration system designers, architects, and contractors.

Course Introduction
Refrigeration systems play an important role in today’s modern society and allows us to enjoy a higher standard of living than was possible before their development. At the same time these systems have the potential to damage the environment and be very expensive to operate and maintain. Designing the system correctly is important to the owners, those that must operate and maintain the system, the end users of the products, and those that would have to deal with a system failure. This course will examine basic design considerations.
