Flood Damage-resistant Materials Requirements for Buildings Located in Special Flood Hazard Areas

Vincent D. Reynolds, MBA, PE

Floods from 100-year storm events or 1% annual chance events can have damaging and catastrophic effects for buildings located in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA). The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has developed requirements in order to eliminate or mitigate damage to buildings in SFHA.

This course will describe the design, construction and planning requirements for floodproofing non-residential buildings under the NFIP. This course material is based on the document “Flood Damage-resistant Materials Requirements for Buildings Located in Special Flood Hazard Areas” as published on the website of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
