“By 2017 it will take 5 million years to watch all the video that will cross global networks in a single month” (History channel “Modern Marvels”) This has been made possible by the great reduction of the cost of data transmission, largely due to fiber optics. However, the demand for bandwidth is ever growing. Silicon photonics promises to show the way forward to even more bandwidth at lower cost. The goal is to familiarize the reader with some of the most recent innovations in silicon photonics. Recently published papers and recently granted patents in silicon photonics show that silicon photonics are about to greatly reduce the cost of bandwidth in data centers. This course will give a background in the fiber optic technology, and show how silicon photonics is about to revolutionize the industry. Heterogeneous integration of III-V compounds into silicon chips with optical functions fabricated using standard CMOS techniques are soon going to decrease costs like never before. This course builds on E464, however, if the reader has some familiarity with how semiconductor lasers and detectors function, it is not necessary to have taken E464.
This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
