Learning Units (Hours)
Tunnels are unlike any other civil engineering structures. Although a tunnel structure often needs support systems made up of concrete and steel, it is the ground that is the major part of the structure. This course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to tunnel construction, from site investigation to tunneling techniques. Besides the challenges of tunneling through various types of soil/rock, we will discuss in detail the three basic steps to a tunnel's success: excavation, support and lining. In addition, we will address how to reduce fire hazards during tunnel operations. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
