Artificial Intelligence: Technologies for Smart Systems Design

Warren T. Jones, Ph.D., P.E.

Course Outline

Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are now being applied in many branches of engineering to solve problems and to provide intelligent interfaces for systems and equipment. This course provides an introduction to the four major AI techniques of rule-based expert systems, neural networks, genetic algorithms and fuzzy logic as well as pointers to web resources and books for further reading. In addition, the emerging technologies of soft computing and chat bot agents are discussed. The synthetic character embodiments of these agents are attracting increasing attention since there is evidence that the right character choice can increase the website hit rate.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Intended Audience

This course is intended for all engineers.

Course Introduction

Smart system design expertise is becoming increasingly important for all branches of engineering. Knowledge of the artificial intelligence techniques that enable the embedding of smart systems components provides the opportunity to include additional capabilities and efficiencies in engineering systems. The four AI technologies of expert systems, neural networks, genetic algorithms and fuzzy logic have been successfully applied to a wide variety of engineering problems. Some examples are the following: monitoring coal combustion efficiency, packet transmission optimization, fault diagnosis of complex circuit boards, chemical process fault diagnosis, selection of bridge deck joints, crisis management in electrical power systems and optimizing traffic control. This course provides an introduction to these four AI technologies as well as the emerging technologies of soft computing and chat bots.
