Steel Sheet Piling

Matthew Stuart, P.E., S.E., P.Eng.

Course Outline

This one-hour online course will provide the user with an understanding of the general structural design guidelines associated with the use of structural steel sheet. In addition examples of project applications of steel sheet piling, the development of the design parameters and the basis for the structural analysis of sheet piling is discussed.

This course includes a true-false quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Learning Objective

At the conclusion of this course, the student will:

Course Introduction

Steel sheet piling is used as soil retaining structures at waterfront bulkheads and open excavations. Bulkheads must sometimes be designed as seawalls to prevent flooding of the adjacent inland area. Sheet piling can also be used as cutoff structures to prevent the migration of ground contaminants into adjacent waterways.

Sheet pile walls can be designed as either cantilevered or anchored structures. The response and loading criteria for steel sheet piles is dependent on the types of soils retained.

Course Summary

Steel sheet piling is used as soil retaining structures at waterfront bulkheads and open excavations. Bulkheads must sometimes be designed as seawalls to prevent flooding of the adjacent inland area. Sheet piling can also be used as cutoff structures to prevent the migration of ground contaminants into adjacent waterways however provisions for the sealing of the interlock joints must be provided.

Sheet pile walls can be designed as either cantilevered or anchored structures. The response and loading criteria for steel sheet piles is dependent on the types of soils retained. Impact loads typically control the design of seawalls.
