Introduction to Subsea Engineering for Electrical Engineers

Course Outline

This 4-hour PDH course focuses on the electrical aspect of subsea engineering and provides students an overall understanding of various electrical components on topside facilities as well as subsea components designed to work in seawater.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

This course is intended for electrical engineers who are interested in learning more about the subsea and deepwater engineering industry.

Attendee can learn the specialized equipment used in the development of subsea oil and gas fields, the general requirements of designing and operating topside and subsea equipment, and current safety and environmental standards.

Course Introduction

Subsea technology in offshore oil and gas production is a highly specialized field with particular demands on engineering and simulation. Most of the new oil fields are located in deep water at a water depth of 10,000 feet. Devices in these deepwater oil fields are exposed to extreme pressure and harsh temperatures. Even with these conditions, engineers must ensure both topside and subsea devices are reliable to safeguard the environment and make the production of oil and gas economically feasible. This course introduces the electrical components developed and used by the offshore petroleum industry to safely and effectively produce oil and gas.

Course Summary

Many aspects of electrical components used for subsea applications are covered in this course. Devices located on topside facilities that are discussed in this course include: master control station, topside umbilical termination assembly, electrical power unit, subsea power and communication unit, and topside uninterruptible power supply. Subsea devices that are discussed in this course include: subsea control module, electric submersible pump, subsea electrical connectors, electrical flying leads, subsea distribution unit, subsea power grid, and subsea uninterruptible power supply.

An all-electric subsea control system is discussed as an alternative to existing electro-hydraulic systems.
