Environmental Benefits of Advanced Oil & Gas Production

John Poullain, P.E.

This three-hour online course provides the advances in the Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) processes and in oil and gas production. It discusses the benefits advanced oil and gas methods have made in exploration and production and the resulting environmental benefits. More efficient methods cut emission of air pollutants and greenhouse gases, reduce size of footprint, and reduce offshore spills and risks of blowouts. It introduces the processes, problems, fundamental engineering aspects of applications, and the economics basis on which advanced oil and gas production is implemented. Exploration methods, ongoing R & D, and emerging methods and regulations are also described.

This course is based on DOE’s publications, “Environmental Benefits of Advanced Oil and Gas Production”, (2011 Edition) and “DOE EOR Program”, (2010 Edition). A multiple-choice quiz is included at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
